Aashima Jain is not your regular youngster out of college who is still wondering what to do with herself. She is a dynamic digipreneur who started her own business “Digitaltadka” in January 2014 while still in her early twenties. The young Mumbaikar was in her third year of BMM at UPG College when the subject ‘Magazine and Newspaper Design’ caught her fancy. She started getting interested in Adobe Photoshop and with a little help from her teacher, she would spend eight to ten hours a day on Photoshop trying to learn as much as she could. It fascinated her so much that she decided to learn designing in depth.
After graduating, Aashima joined her Masters course in Communication from KC College and simultaneously enrolled herself for a designing course from Arena Animation. It was now that the journey that would define her career began. She was exposed to other designing softwares like Illustrator, Corel Draw, Dreamweaver et al. Two years of intense learning and self practice at Arena and self development at KC College gave her enough confidence to start Digitaltadka.
Digitaltadka is a Graphic and Web Design Studio that offers services mainly under three categories- Graphic Design, Website Building and Personalized Designs. Graphic design includes logos, business cards, pamphlet, brochures etc. Website building has everything from buying a domain name to developing the website and hosting it. What Aashima finds most interesting is the personalized design- it includes chocolate wrapping, diary covers, calendars etc. Digitaltadka recently completed an order of 3000 calendars for Pepperfry. Aashima considers this a milestone project. She also does social media management and magazine design.
Her day usually starts with checking mails and going through the list of work scheduled for the day. Since it’s a start up, Aashima handles most of the work herself like running around for meetings and looking at the printing assignments. She spends most of her time in front of her desktop designing for her projects. Each day is different- while one day she may spend 10 to 12 hours just designing, there are times when she is out the entire day attending meetings.
Owning a start up is no cakewalk and Aashima has faced several challenges too. She says that her greatest challenge has been getting clients. She started getting work from her friends and their friends to begin with but creating an identity for Digitaltadka was not easy. She had to make people aware of her presence. She feels that Digitaltadka has helped her to be more organized and taught her time management as managing work and time is quite a task. She invests a lot in social media marketing which has helped her spread awareness about her business. As time went by and projects came in, it was her work that spoke for her and got her more clients.
Aashima emphasizes the importance of networking to get more clients. She believes that meeting new people and discussing about her work helps her get more projects. Facebook, she feels, is one of the biggest media to get new clients. True to her own work ethic, Aashima advises fellow business owners to be true to themselves, their work and their clients. She quips that we are nothing without the ecosystem we live in.
Though she tends to panic quickly, difficult times don’t get her down as she tries to keep herself calm and thinks how to make the situation better. Discussing the problems with family and friends really helps. Aashima’s passion for designing and honesty of effort has surely set her on a path of great success and Digitaltadka is surely going to scale new heights under her able leadership.
